Provides definitions for terms used in the Act, including "adopted person", "member of the family" and "personal representative." Parts II and III do not apply to persons who died before this Act commenced; Parts IV–VI apply only if the cause of action arises after the Act commenced. The Act binds the Government. Members of the Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces and the Government (or its officers) are exempt from tort liability for death or personal injury in specified circumstances, subject to ministerial certification and a court exception where acts are not connected to duty. Damages may be awarded for funeral expenses when those expenses have been incurred by the parties for whose benefit the action is brought.

Section 1
