The LC1 Court of Rugarama exercised jurisdiction not vested in it by law when it decreed land to the respondent in a transaction involving 14 million shillings, far exceeding the statutory monetary limit of 5,000/=. The transaction was not a sale but a rudimentary mortgage, and the enforcement of such a security interest was outside the LC1 Court's competence. The High Court, therefore, set aside the orders of the LC1 Court by way of revision, as only the High Court had jurisdiction to entertain such matters at the relevant time.
