Nangumya v The Attorney General & 2 Others (Constitutional Petition 1 of 2021) [2024] UGCC 9 (25 March 2024)

The Constitutional Court held that the petition partially succeeded. The Court found that the High Court's order requiring the applicant to remit UGX 59,900,000 to the 3rd respondent did not violate the applicant's constitutional rights to property or to practice his profession, as the funds belonged to the client except for the portion covering duly taxed fees. The applicant's claim to a lien over the entire sum was unsupported by Ugandan law, which only allows retention of client funds for taxed costs.
